What is a Certified Child Life Specialist?

A Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) is a trained professional who specializes in helping children, teens, and families cope with the stress and challenges of hospitalization, illness, and procedures. With expertise in child and lifespan development, psychology, and family-centered care, CCLS’s teach youth about the health issues that affect them; explain procedures, illness, and death in a way they understand.

Child life specialists work in various healthcare settings, such as hospitals, clinics, pediatric offices, and community settings to support children and families during difficult times. In a healthcare setting, these specialists play a crucial role in ensuring that families are comfortable and prepared. In a community setting, like Milika, child life specialists provide support with challenges such as trauma, grief, or chronic illness, focusing on providing emotional support, education, and coping strategies to help children navigate difficult circumstances in and out of the hospital.

Aside from work with babies, toddlers, children, and teenagers, child life specialists also work with families, providing education and support to each participating member. For parents, a CCLS can provide reassurance and support, dedicated to meeting the unique emotional and developmental needs of the children and teens they serve. They also serve as advocates for children and families, helping to create a more positive medical experience.

In simpler terms, child life specialists are like teachers about all things medical! Plus, they can be there for a listening ear and support when times get a little too tough to handle.
