Parenting shouldn't feel like a battle every day.

Do you find yourself:

  • Repeating the same instruction five times?
  • Walking on eggshells to avoid another meltdown?
  • Dreading bedtime, transitions, or getting out the door?
  • Feeling frustrated that consequences don't seem to work?
  • Wondering why your child listens to everyone except you?
  • Worrying that you're losing connection with your child

If so, you're not alone.

Many loving, dedicated parents find themselves stuck in exhausting cycles of tantrums, defiance, emotional outbursts, power struggles, and constant correction. It can leave everyone in the family feeling frustrated, disconnected, and overwhelmed.

The good news is that you don't have to figure it out on your own.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is one of the most researched and effective treatments for young children with behavioral and emotional challenges. Through live coaching and research-backed strategies, PCIT helps parents build a stronger relationship with their child while learning practical tools that reduce conflict and increase cooperation.

At MILIKA Center for Therapy & Resilience, we help families move from daily battles to greater confidence, connection, and calm.

Schedule a complimentary consultation to learn whether PCIT may be right for your family.

What is Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)?

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based treatment for children ages 2–8 and their caregivers that strengthens the parent-child relationship while helping families address challenging behaviors.

Unlike traditional therapy, where a therapist primarily works directly with the child, PCIT actively involves parents in the therapeutic process. Parents learn specific, evidence-based skills and receive live coaching from a therapist as they practice those skills with their child.

This hands-on approach helps parents feel more confident responding to challenging behaviors in the moment, while creating more positive and connected interactions with their child.

PCIT is not simply about getting children to "behave better." The deeper goal is to help families develop lasting skills that support:

  • Stronger parent-child connection
  • More cooperation and positive behavior
  • Improved emotional regulation
  • Greater parenting confidence
  • Healthier communication and interaction patterns
  • More positive and predictable family relationships

Over time, parents become better equipped to understand their child's behavior, respond with greater consistency, and strengthen the relationship that serves as the foundation for emotional development.

Because when parents have the right tools and support, children can thrive.

What Does a PCIT Session Look Like?

PCIT is highly interactive and practical. In most sessions, the child and parent participate together, allowing the therapist to observe their interactions and provide real-time coaching as the parent practices new skills.

Some sessions or portions of treatment may be parent-focused, but the child is present for most sessions so that parents can practice the skills with their child, in real time, with support from the therapist.

This makes PCIT more than learning parenting strategies - it gives families the opportunity to practice, receive feedback, and build confidence together.

Signs Your Child May Benefit from PCIT

PCIT may help if your child frequently struggles with:

  • Tantrums or meltdowns
  • Defiance or not listening
  • Aggressive behaviors such as hitting, kicking, or throwing
  • Emotional outbursts
  • Difficulty following directions
  • Hyperactivity or impulsivity
  • Frequent power struggles
  • Difficulty with transitions
  • Parent-child conflict
  • Behavioral challenges at home, school, or daycare

PCIT Can Be Helpful for Children With:

Mild Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Emotional Regulation Difficulties

Trauma-Related Concerns

Why Parents Love PCIT

Many parenting programs provide information.

PCIT provides coaching.

Instead of simply talking about what to do, you'll learn and practice new skills with support from a trained therapist.

Parents can leave treatment feeling:

✓ More confident

✓ More consistent

✓ Better equipped to handle challenging behaviors

✓ More connected to their child

✓ Less stressed and overwhelmed

These are skills that continue helping families long after therapy ends.

PCIT IN LOS ANGELES & ENCINO, CA

How Does PCIT Work?

PCIT is typically delivered in two phases, with each phase building on the skills learned in the one before it.

Phase 1: Child-Directed Interaction (CDI)

The first phase focuses on strengthening the parent-child relationship.

Parents learn practical skills for building connection, trust, and positive attention through everyday interactions and play. With live coaching from the therapist, parents practice noticing and responding to their child's positive behaviors while creating more opportunities for warmth, praise, and connection.

When children feel seen, understood, and connected, they are often more engaged, responsive, and willing to cooperate.

Phase 2: Parent-Directed Interaction (CDI)

Once a stronger foundation of connection is established, parents learn skills for setting limits and managing challenging behaviors effectively.

Parents learn how to:

  • Give clear, effective directions
  • Set appropriate and predictable limits
  • Follow through calmly and consistently
  • Respond to challenging behaviors without escalating the interaction
  • Reduce power struggles and increase cooperation

The goal is not simply to gain control of challenging behaviors. It is to help parents feel more confident, consistent, and effective, while helping children learn appropriate boundaries and expectations.

Over time, families can develop interaction patterns that feel more connected, predictable, and manageable—and less stressful and exhausting.
